An Old Scandal on a Modern Stage – 7a Visits An Ideal Husband
A rising politician caught in a scandal, state secrets exchanged for financial gain, and reputations on the brink—no, this wasn’t breaking news from today’s headlines, but a performance of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, brought brilliantly to life by the Open House Theatre on May 29th 2025. Class 7a had the pleasure of attending this timeless political comedy, which—despite being written over a century ago—felt surprisingly fresh and relevant. Before the performance began, the students were treated to an insightful introduction by Dr. Sandra Mayer from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, who provided valuable context about Wilde’s life, the play’s historical background, and its biting social commentary. The performance itself was a delight: the actors were fantastic, capturing both the wit and drama of Wilde’s sharp dialogue. From Lady Chiltern to the charming Lord Goring, each character was portrayed with energy and elegance. Laughter, intrigue, and a glimpse into the complexities of morality and public image—all wrapped up in a theatrical evening the students won’t soon forget. |
